With the aftermath of the frenzy for the Missoni for Target collaboration and the ensuing backlash after customers complained that their orders were canceled due to fulfillment issues, Target is hoping that their upcoming collaboration with Jason Wu will overshadow some of the other news.
And Sunday night’s Golden Globes may have just ensured that. While design darling Wu is well known as the guy who dressed Michelle Obama on inauguration night, his continually rising star shone even brighter after dressing another Michelle (Williams, that is) at the 69th Golden Globes Awards.
The star, who took home a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe, wore a stunning navy-and-black Jason Wu gown with three-quarter-length sleeves. In celebration of the February 5 launch, here’s a short list of the things you need to know before you click through to Target.com next month.

1. Yes, Wu designed Michelle Obama’s inauguration dress, but she’s actually worn him on many other occasions. The gown, which featured intricate flower appliques, is signature Wu. Each collection he does highlights his love of embellishment, be it with flora or feathers. We’ll never forget that custom-made floor-sweeping gown, but don’t expect to see this kind of detail hanging from the racks at Target.

2. Jason Wu began his career designing dolls (and he continues to do so). He funded his first collection in 2006 with the money he earned from his doll collections, which included collaborations with Ru Paul. His miniature creations feature the same simple femininity that his full-size collections have, including beadwork, lace and structured handbags.

3. He’s not a collab virgin. Wu, who interned at Narciso Rodriguez, designed a capsule collection for TSE and collaborated with Net-a-Porter.com for an exclusive line of wedding gowns. But his collection for Target will be the first mass market foray and the best way for fans of all means to get their mitts on pieces from this First Lady-approved designer.
