Hostess-with-the-mostest articles in magazines are typically manufactured and manicured for readers’ pleasure, as it’s not just any hostess that has the natural ability to pull off effortless entertaining with panache and grace.
But Hollywood caterer Lulu Powers is just such a breed. And her entertaining embraces the high-low aesthetic with aplomb! In any given week, Powers is effortlessly hosting multiple visits and drop-bys from friends and relatives, pulling out the paté and crusty bread, pouring a glass of wine and setting out fun bowls of Red Vines, mini Reeses cups and other naughty morsels. Twinkling lights in her courtyard beckon every visitor to get comfy, relax and dish and nosh. Candles are aglow every evening, and the house is always camera ready. (Convenient, since her husband, Stephen Danelian, is a celebrated photographer who has shot for Vanity Fair, Allure, Vogue, Rolling Stone and more.)
Now Powers, a former personal chef to some of L.A.’s most notable denizens, passes on her-ahem-powers (do forgive me, Lulu) to all of us in her recently released book Lulu Powers Food to Flowers (Harper Collins). From stocking a party pantry to having food at the ready for foraging houseguests and her secret “cheesy eggs” made with one of France’s most beloved low-brow processed cheeses: Laughing Cow. God bless la vache qui rit! And if you’re listening Fromageries Bel: We will also gladly devour your Boursin and Mini Babybel in a box, with a fox, here or there…
But even more impressive than our obsession with all things cheese and Powers’ refreshingly fun and user-friendly entertaining book is that the private book-release party held at the home of social luminary Colleen Bell was better attended than many events we go to for far more high-profile figures — and Powers managed to sell over 350 books that evening!
We love her Coffee and Newspaper breakfast party idea and are dying to host one of our own! We’ll take her tip and provide towelettes and hand wipes to keep the newsprint at bay while we devour the Mini Blueberry Pancackes!
