Yesterday, the Beyhive swarm was buzzing at a fever pitch over the surprise release of Beyoncé’s new single “Formation,” a day before her hotly anticipated halftime performance for Super Bowl 50 at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where she will be taking the stage with Coldplay.
Fans could barely contain themselves, as this is Beyoncé’s first new song released since 2014. As to be expected, the blast radius from the meme and GIF explosion featuring shots from the video nearly took out the Internet. (Did we mention, by the way, that daughter Blue Ivy is in it?)
And, as if dropping new music wasn’t already exciting enough for fans, the fashion from the video sent style mavens in a tizzy, including pieces from Gucci, Fendi, Zimmerman and more — not to mention hair that would make Rapunzel lunge at Beyoncé in a fit of tress-induced envy!
Beyoncé’s online store also unleashed an onslaught of new clothing and accessories with instaquotes from the song, including, “I’m so reckless when I rock my Givenchy dress,” and the soon-to-be ubiquitous phrase, “I got hot sauce in my bag.” The last phrase is one of many provocative lines in the highly political video that makes reference to prickly race relations, a battered, post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, Beyoncé’s Creole roots and much more!
And while we know that the highly political nature of the video will be hotly debated in the weeks and months to come, we were equally as impressed with the Bey’s marketing savvy, as we were with the envelope-pushing song and video. And, we applaud her for beating the manufacturers to the punch before the onslaught of unauthorized merch comes out!
In the meantime, we couldn’t help but wonder to ourselves: Well, what bags would go best with hot sauce? And then, which kind of hot sauce should we put in said bags? We have a few ideas…
