With 38 pieces in his Resort collection, it’s no surprise that Michael Kors was drawing from a few of his favorite girls for the collection. He went on record saying that the collection was a bit of this and a bit of that, a dash of Bardot and a teaspoon of Birkin, but in the end, the collection was a solid collection of clothes that channeled the ease and nonchalance of both French fashion icons, only seen through the lens of a cool California girl. Seem like too much to get your head around? Think again, because in true Kors fashion, the collection was full of easy-to-wear pieces that cool girls everywhere are sure to covet.

The colors in the collection were subdued — what better way to dodge nosey paparazzi than to stay sedate? — but the Jordan almond pastels (direct from Kor’s monologue during the presentation) were a fresh take on the usually saturated technicolor hues of resort collections. There were plenty of packable goods, including slouchy cargo pants that blended cotton and sateen that looked all the better wrinkled and easy knits that doubled up as bikini cover-ups and run-to-the-farmer’s-market slouchy staples.

Bardot appeared in the ultra-feminine pieces, including a crystal-embellished Chantilly lace dress, gauzy peasant blouses and more, but she was tempered with plenty of the tomboy staples that Birkin was known for wearing in her globetrotting adventures. As a constant touchstone for designers, it’s easy to see why Birkin’s mix of masculine and feminine works so well for resort: there’s nothing more comfortable than relaxed pants and a blouse you can just throw on.

Kors is known for creating a jet-set mood no matter the season, so Resort collections allow him to really go full force with his trademark blend of glamour and American sport, and the pieces that he said were perfect for “food shopping in Malibu,” namely a maxi-skirt that was light-as-air paired with a cashmere surfer sweater were perfectly indulgent for him and for shoppers that will surely swoon for the look.

The show included one more muse: Kors’ new garden terrace. That influence showed up on the closing dresses, which featured botanical prints featuring oleander and wisteria. On swingy dresses that ranged from fit-and-flare cocktail pieces to the must-have midi length and a fresh one-shoulder gown, it was the perfect way to give his girl evening options that were as light and effortless as the rest of their wardrobes. No matter where you’re headed next year, Kors’ resort collection has you covered.
