In addition to the four main cities that participate in Fashion Week (which is actually fashion month), a few designers have decided to show their goods in a new format: video fashion week. Past designers have included Vena Cava, Erin Fetherston and Wren. In addition, designers aren’t as connected to the format as they are to the runways of New York or Paris. Sometimes a label will choose to show one season and do a video the next. L.A.-based designer Raquel Allegra decided to release her label’s video, To Live and Dye in L.A., in Paris at Merci, a store situated on the Marais. The video showcased a softer, tailored and more laid-back feel that takes her brand away from the luxe, deconstructed looks she built her brand on.
When Raquel Allegra burst onto the fashion stage, she was known for a shredding technique that made a few of her most show-stopping looks appear as if they were crafted from swathes of cobwebs. She was so connected to shredding fabric that she compulsively shredded any time she had a chance. On planes, in cars, any time she had even a few minutes of idling. She’s been moving away from that house signature and adding a few new trademarks to her line. With Spring 2015, she’s bringing a whole new feel to her line with a dying technique that took center stage in her Video Fashion Week video.

Allegra has been experimenting with tye-dye for a few seasons now, but this Spring, she’s added raw edges and brighter colors. She’s also confined the technicolor tye-dye. While there are plenty of allover pieces, the standouts were pants with a dyed panel down the side and a relaxed, tailored blazer with dyed stripes. New additions to her line included crocheted slips and an L.A. mainstay: denim. And since layering has been in the Allegra lexicon since the beginning, she offered up plenty of skirts, tops and dresses and more that are sure to look great mixed, mashed or worn alone. It’s the kind of dressing that catches the eye of street style photographers — without trying too hard. In short: the perfect balance.
