The world’s eyes have been on South America. Not only was FIFA’s World Cup happening this summer, but the Olympics are on the horizon and that’s sure to bring an even more intense focus on the continent. Rozae Nichols, the designer of L.A.’s Clover Canyon, took inspiration from the vibrant colors and joie de vivre of South America and channeled it into one of the brand’s most memorable collections to date. Not only did Nichols experiment with new technique, she introduced a few solid staples to accompany her line’s print-perfect pieces.

As we found from hours of watching the World Cup, South America’s all about passion. Nichols channeled that passion through bright, bold prints (what else?) featuring oversized roses and orchid-hued florals that clashed and ran together the way the crowds seemed to in the soccer stadiums. The collection was a kaleidoscope of feathers, florals and acid-hued geometrics that are sure to satisfy her base clientele — the ones that flock to her every season for the newest prints and the latest patterns. The usual fare, such as scuba dresses and fit-and-flare frocks are sure to keep those girls happy, but new customers are sure to be drawn in by the introduction of a few softer pieces, such as an allover printed jumpsuit or an off-the shoulder sweater that looked as if it was plucked right off the Girl from Ipanema herself.

And while the prints told the story of the line’s southern sojourn, closer inspection revealed that it was precisely the place that Nichols choose to play. Some of the pieces were reversible, shifting from hyper-florals to stripes, giving shoppers two looks in one. And when she wasn’t experimenting with double printing, Nichols tried her hand at printing her signature patterns onto sequins and micro-fringed fabrics, giving the prints a whole new life with the slightest movement. And as for the solids? There were plenty in comparison to past seasons’ offerings. Laser-cut neoprene was used for skirts and crop tops in white and blush, giving the brand’s patterns the perfect contrast. So even if patterns aren’t your preference, Nichols is giving you a reason to take a look.
