Monday Muse: Moschino Brings Vegas to Hollywood for Resort 2018

While some brands showcase their resort shows in far-off places and exotic locales, Jeremy Scott brought celebs and editors to Hollywood for his resort 2017 collection for Moschino. It was a natural fit, since the cheeky Italian brand has been focusing on kitsch instead of couture. With those gold block letters become as ubiquitous as French fashion house monograms and quilted leather, it made sense to showcase a collection right where the gliteratti congregate. Scott transformed Milk Studios to an old-school Las Vegas showcase, with everything from neon lights and Sin City staples.

Celebs flocked to fete the collection, including Tracee Ellis Ross, Vanessa Hudgens, Fergie, L.A.’s Dita von Teese, and Miranda Kerr. And while they were all wearing head-to-toe Moschino, the clothes on the runway were unlike anything they sported. Blending both menswear and women’s wear, the co-ed fashion show relied on Vegas staples like feathers, fringe, and rhinestones — which are all becoming Moschino calling cards in their own right.

Betty Boop, Gumby, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Olive Oyl appeared on T-shirts, knits, and accessories, but we suspect they’ll make an appearance on street style stars, too. The clothes blended western and rock-and-roll staples, like cowboy boots, flame motifs, and bold, brash patterns. It was a feast for the eyes, even when it got overwhelming with neon backdrops and the models du jour (Hailey Baldwin and her squad), but retailers are sure to see jackpots when these clothes hit the floor. In a world of Instagram dominance, these clothes were made to be photographed. It’s no surprise that Real Housewives star Erica Jayne (née Girardi) is often snapped Scott’s designs both on and off the show. Bustiers and embellished denim seemed to be tailor made for her onstage persona and its real-world counterpart, though it’s tough to see where the two separate.

Logo fanatics will be satisfied with the brand’s new bowling bag and the knits, all of which got the Moschino treatment with intarsia details and bold gold hardware. And continuing in the tradition of Insta-fashion, there were plenty of picks made for selfies, like phone cases and Dolly Parton-style rhinestone baubles. Like Sin City itself, it was all shine and gloss — and Angelenos couldn’t get enough.
