Monday Muse: Easy Rider Inspires Pam & Gela Spring 2016

There are fashion labels that reinvent the wheel every season, showing head-scratching designs, conceptual pieces and Lady Gaga-approved wares. And then there’s Pam & Gela. Instead of trying to impress editors, tastemakers and the industry, the designers look to their own closets (and Nash-Taylor’s daughter) and design pieces that they want to wear. Sound revolutionary? In the scope of fashion, it really is, but that strategy has worked for P&G, because the ladies are growing their brand after every passing season. What started as a small collection has grown to include everything, accessories included. And while there aren’t any head-to-toe terry jumpsuits, the duo that made the tracksuit a glam (and ubiquitous) go-to piece haven’t totally abandoned their roots. With a collection inspired by la vie boheme — what else — and Easy Rider, it looks like festivalgoers will have plenty to choose from when the season rolls around again next year.

You’ll have to squint hard to spot the terrycloth, but it’s there. It’s just been given the trompe l’oeil treatment, so what look like patchwork flares — utterly covetable, at that — are actually made of super-soft terry. Comfort? You don’t even have to ask. Just like those tracksuits that built an empire, you’ll spot those flares on PYTs when they’re stepping out at LAX. But aside from the terry, there were other luxe boho touches too. Pam & Gela has never been afraid of fringe and it’s become a house signature. This season, it’s not on moto jackets, it’s been incorporated on lightweight knits and tissue-weight t-shirts. All the better to show off your moves in front of the main stage. Suede jackets, embroidered peasant blouses, and leather miniskirts might seem like special occasion pieces, but styled just so, they’re just the thing to up the ante when you’re wearing your basics day in and day out.

From the very beginning, Skaist-Levy and Nash-Taylor have had a knack for knowing what real girls (and women) want to wear, and there’s no doubt that they’ve managed to keep their mojo going through this latest venture. Striped t-shirts, faux-vintage band tees and suede joggers — the piece of the season if you ask the pair — will be seasonless staples long after spring is in the rearview mirror, making them worth their weight in glitter. The boho Easy Rider references were subtle, but enough to give their fans something new to lust for. The fatigue Sgt. Pepper coat and suede shorts are sure to be street style superstars, too, so if you spot the collection at Saks, Nordstrom, Elyse Walker or Maxwell, be sure to snag the standouts. The brand is all about California style, and it seems like it’s nailed the look to a (distressed) T. Laid-back, luxe and effortless, the ladies of Pam & Gela prove again and again that the things they want to wear are exactly what girls everywhere want, too.
