Monday Muse: Elizabeth & James Goes Minimal

When a brand has a sister label —  and let’s face it, which one doesn’t these days? — it’s easy to assume that designers use the higher-end option to experiment and the more affordable, ahem, contemporary, label is where they can distill their big ideas into more approachable and affordable options. Until now, Elizabeth and James had been a younger sister to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row, with denim, accessories, and more. Now, it seems the line is growing up to stand alongside its big sis, because for pre-fall, the brand is embracing the luxe minimalism that’s become a hallmark of the über-luxe line.

Minimalism doesn’t necessarily mean clean lines and austerity, however. Instead, Elizabeth and James’ latest outing was all about editing.

Pared-down, each piece seemed essential, like the Olsens had Konmarie’d everything down to exactly what you’d need for any occasion. For work, there was unexpected shirting and linen trousers. Brunches and day trips? You’ll be outfitted in midi dresses and long, lean jackets. The looks were marked with a wrap silhouette and rouching that traced the body’s curves. Skinny belts and flowing sashes add a little extra detail for those who are still under Gucci’s magpie spell, though with the rich texture of crinkled silk, the combination of sheer panels and poplin button-ups, and wear-everywhere flats, even die-hard maximalists are going to be converted.
