Monday Muse: Tommy Hilfiger & Gigi Hadid Take Over Venice

Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2017

Last year, Tommy Hilfiger and Cali girl-turned-model du jour Gigi Hadid took over New York’s South Street Seaport for a see now, buy now fashion extravaganza that transformed a New York pier into Tommy Pier. This season, Hilfiger and Hadid took the show on the road and brought that same festival-cum-fashion show to Venice Beach, where the boardwalk was transformed into Tommyland, a veritable fashion theme park that included one Super Bowl performer, plenty of celebs, and clothes that blended Coachella cool with Hilfiger’s signature spin on Americana.

In addition to appearances from Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, a bevy of Hadids (on and off the runway), Real Housewives aplenty, and just about anyone in L.A., there were clothes to see. After last season’s near-immediate sell-out, it was no surprise that the merch booths, where fans and fashion fanatics alike could snag select pieces from the show, and the TommyxGigi online selection were wiped clean by the next morning.

The options included swimwear and plenty of on-trend bombers and denim festooned with Hilfiger’s signature red, white, and blue. Stripes appeared on bikinis, jeans were low-slung, and there was something for everyone, from athleisure-inspired sweats worn with tailored walking shorts to boho maxis paired with badass moto boots. There were anoraks. Leather pants. American flags. Overall, it seemed like an homage to the summer of love and Woodstock, only updated for the Insta set with bold colors and a touch Cali cool.

If fashion is democratic, Hilfiger proved that to be true with a truly inclusive roster that proved that these clothes are meant to be seen on anyone, anywhere. Don’t be surprised to see the striped shorts and florals all over your Coachella feed come April (between pics of Beyoncé, of course). And after the show, there was plenty to see and do. Models mingled with celebs and influencers while munching on Korean street tacos. There was a dance party and a dedicated hashtag. There was lots of fun to be had — which seems to be a theme of these West Coast outings. Without the pomp and circumstance of NYFW looming over designers and their presentations, they can let their hair down a little and party.
