Inside Burro
Abbot Kinney’s Firefly was a place where parents could grab unique gifting goods and home accents without the same stock that filled big box stores and a unique eye — namely, it was the “everything one needs to live a well-styled California life.” Erinn Berkson, the woman behind Firefly and the expanded Kid Firefly clothing store next door, picked and stocked the stores with her favorite things for the last 15 years. But things change, and under the new moniker Burro, Berkson is bringing her unique brand of California living to two new spots and revamping her old standby Venice Beach location.
“When I decided to open another location outside of Venice, I played around with the idea of a new name and look for the new space. It had taken fifteen years for Firefly to really grow into the store it is today, and I was looking for a new fresh concept that visually encompassed what Firefly has come to be,” says Burro owner Erinn Berkson. “The idea of the hard working, loyal burro pioneering across the desert landscape carrying goods from all over really resonated with me. I’m so happy to bring this concept to Abbot Kinney, the Malibu Country Mart and Westlake. This is just the beginning.”
While Burro has a new creative direction, expect the same assortment of goods that filled Firefly. The new locations — Malibu Country Mart opened yesterday and the Westlake Plaza Center is on the books for a 2015 opening — reflect the airy and clean new look, too, integrating rough hewn floors, copper and wood fixtures and a selection of giftables and home accents that beg exploration and inquiry. The Burro stores retain the ethos of Firefly, giving shoppers a veritable treasure trove of goods sourced from around the world.
Inside Burro
The Venice Beach location has become a go-to spot for locals and tourists alike and Berkson hopes that the expanded reach of Burro will have the same effect in their respective neighborhoods. All three locations are set to stock everything from art books to home decor in addition to never-before-seen toys.
