Kate Moss doesn’t just inspire the street style set. The super model — and her unique brand of personal style — was the inspiration behind Monique Lhuillier’s latest collection, which saw the designer stepping away from her usual corseted, ultra-Hollywood look for a darker, edgier take on glamour. No, it was not a goth collection from the red carpet regular, but the glam collection touched on the ’70s and ’80s with Moss’ own style thrown in for a unique mix that was a fresh take on Lhuillier’s usual feminine frocks.

The L.A.-based Lhuillier is known for bridal and tulle, so it was surprising not to have a single look float down the runway with a corseted back or a full skirt. Instead, the designer cut all of her fabrics on the bias, giving every dress a body-hugging shape and an ease that reflected Moss’ relaxed take on getting dressed. Instead of princess pinks and romantic florals, Lhuillier used deep jewel tones, a digitized floral camouflage print and plenty of textural fabrications and embellishments. So while it was a more pared down take on the Lhuillier woman, it was far from stripped down.

Moss’ personal style popped up in a plunging gown cut in burnout velvet and in a jumpsuit topped with a chubby fur coat. There were even dresses that boasted padded shoulders. Don’t worry about looking like an ’80s power bitch though, because the look was strong without looking cartoony. The colors were decidedly dark, but there was plenty of sparkle and shine for both day and night.

Backstage, Lhuillier admitted that she started the collection looking at the ’20s, but then she veered in to ’70s glam rock territory and just took off with it. The result was an unexpected mix from the designer, especially when colorful shearling toppers came down the catwalk, but when Kate Moss and her singular style is the touchstone, anything goes.
