It’s been 10 years since Erin Fetherston’s very first show at New York Fashion Week. The Berkeley-born designer previously showed in during Paris Fashion Week, where she studied at Parson’s Paris, but that wasn’t the most exciting part of the spring 2017 collection — this runway outing was her very first as a mother.

“I have a more relaxed attitude because you just got to go with the flow,” she told Vogue. “That has translated in the best possible way to my designs this season.”

Looser shapes, more laid-back silhouettes and a few extra-special fabrics gave the collection a celebratory feel. There were plenty of girly, romantic frocks in the mix, which are — and always will be — a Fetherston trademark. For spring, the designer added of-the-moment off-the-shoulder bodices and a slouchier fit to reflect her customers’ requests for pieces that would work at Topanga Canyon weddings and Malibu cookouts alike. Speaking of Topanga, there was also a boho twist to many of the pieces, including tailored separates and a glitzy flowing jumpsuit that sparkled with the model’s every move.

Motherhood may have loosened up the looks, but they were no less enchanting. The romanticism was still there in long dresses that were given floaty tiers and shimmer.

“I feel like this is a perfect anniversary collection for me, because it really reflects who I’ve been, but it’s also very much a look forward,” Fetherston explained.

The opalescent butterfly-wing fabrics were a definite reflection of the sweet confections of collections past, but with the new boho twists and more polished, grown-up offerings, fans and new customers alike will undoubtedly be drawn to the next decade of Fetherston.
