Fashion’s Night Out 2012: Our Picks in New York, L.A., Paris and Vegas

Yes, it’s that time of year again. It’s the time where everyone (not just VIPs) gets champagne when they’re browsing at Michael Kors, when fashion shows happen right in the middle of Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales and getting a makeover at a makeup counter without buying something after can be guilt-free. It’s Fashion’s Night Out!

Instead of telling you where to go, giving you a detailed itinerary of every event in New York and L.A. or even telling you where you can spot your favorite celebs, we’re chosen the best in each city to help you get the most out of your night without mindlessly trekking from one event to the next. And after seeing many a drunk girl lose their canapés right on the streets of NY last year and many a Louboutin in hand instead of on the ground, we recommend you do the same.

Bergdorf Goodman

Not only is Bergdorf Goodman celebrating Fashion’s Night Out with the rest of the world, they’re also celebrating their 111th birthday this year. Think it’s a strange number to commemorate? We did, too — until we learned why. Eleven years ago, their 100th birthday festivities were put on hold because of the September 11th terrorist attacks, so out of respect, they’ve chosen to fête this year instead. As expected, they’ve got a roster of designer appearances, including Thakoon, Rachel Zoe, Michael Bastian, Lela Rose and more. Why so much star power? Well, each star owes a little of their fame to Bergdorf and their amazing team, but they’ll also be there because the department store’s hosting a book signing for Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s (Harper Design), by Sara James Mnookin.

There’s even a commemorative collection of designer clothes, shoes, accessories and more, meaning you’ll be able to snag a party favor you can wear for seasons to come. We expect that the most covetable pieces will sell out, but some designers were more generous than others. While a few chose to just submit one or two designs for the special collection, leave it to powerhouse Gucci to have eight in total on offer. One last addition: There will be a fashion documentary starring the design world’s biggest names (Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Oscar de la Renta, Victoria Beckham, and more, more more!) which will feature their musings on the department store and its illustrious history.

FNO at Beverly Center

While the designers come out in full force in New York, L.A.’s more about big names of another kind. Kendall Jenner is the face of the activities at Beverly Center, where there will be two fashion shows — one featuring multiple stores from the megamall and a second dedicated to fashions from fast-fashion label Forever 21 — in addition to personal appearances from Vogue‘s West Coast editor Lisa Love and Lucy Hale, star of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars.

Beverly Center will also host Elle and Blair Fowler. The sisters and YouTube stars will be presenting their first novel, Beneath the Glitter (St. Martin’s) and the center will also feature a Paul Frank pop-up shop for real West Coast cred. Get a consult from Lisa Love at the Maybelline New York Color Studio and brush up on your cyber celebs, because a bevvy of bloggers will be making appearances at the True Religion social hub. Wear your most fashionable outfits and maybe you’ll make an impromptu guest appearance on one of their blogs. No matter what you choose to do at Beverly Center, one major perk will be free parking for FNO. And since it’s all contained in the super center, there’s no risk of getting mowed over by a cab when you’re going from party to party.

Want a taste of what’s to come? Check out this PSA for L.A.’s Fashion’s Night Out, which features celebs such as the panel from E!’s Fashion Police (including Joan Rivers herself); Justin Timberlake’s right-hand interior diva Estee Stanley (she’s also a famed celeb stylist); the Fowler Sisters; fashion designers Cynthia Vincent, Tarina Tarantino and Trina Turk; Paula Abdul, Real Housewife Taylor Armstrong and more:

For the first three years of FNO, Paris’ celebrations were limited to the boutiques on Avenue Montaigne and thesurrounding area. While that was anything but a quaint affair, for this year’s festivities, Vogue Paris is moving the celebration to a different part of the City of Lights. Stores situated between the Elysée Palace and Place de la Madeleine will be hosting events, and while it will take a few paces to get from one to the next, we’re guessing that a French Fashion’s Night Out is a more civilized affair than its international counterparts.

But don’t think you can just strut into any store wearing your favorite pair of Manolos or Louboutins. Mais non! To keep things civil — or perhaps to make sure people actually buy something — each store will have a special VIP list, meaning that you might not make it to Céline bash if you’ve only been invited to fête with the fashion crowd at Chloé. Looks like you might have to get to spending if you want in on the action. While it might go against FNO’s fashion-for-all manifesto, leave it to the French to do things their own way.

If you’re feeling a tad more democratic when it comes to your FNO celebrations, head to Las Vegas. Not only can you not swing your Céline trapeze without hitting an Herve Leger-clad club-goer, you can head to the Shoppes at the Palazzo for styling and shopping courtesy of Fashion Police co-host and celeb stylist George Kotsiopoulos. The 150-store megamall will be hosting various events, and serious shoppers will get exclusive gifts when they spend over $250 (a China Glaze nail polish set) or $750 (a $75 gift certificate towards dinner for two). The grand prize? A styling session with Kotsi himself and access to the VIP suite.

If you’re at the other end of the strip, the Lanvin in the Crystals at City Centre will be hosting a special event and offer unique exclusives for your iDevices, along with one-of-a-kind t-shirts with Alber Elbaz’s trademark doodles. For those feeling extra spendy, there will also be a special capsule collection celebrating Alber’s 10-year tenure at the brand, including special Happy bags, big bold baubles and clutches in animal and heart motifs.
